On Wednesday morning, Anurag Dhindsa, who works as the Deputy Director in the Income Tax, Investigation-1 department, filed an FIR against the owner of Dr. Rama Sofat Hospital for obstructing the search operations conducted by the I-T Department in December 2024. The FIR has been registered under Sections 218, 221, 222, 224, 351 and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. These sections essentially entail that not only did the members of Dr. Rama Sofat Hospital not cooperate with the search, but they also actively engaged in threatening the public servants on their premises for conducting the search.
The I-T official stated that two of the doctors threatened him with “dire consequences if the search is conducted and continued on their premises.” The complaint continues to state that the doctors also tried to boast their connections in an attempt for the Department to give up on their search. One of the doctors particularly said that he “would file false cases of sexual harassment against the search team and claimed that he had strong ties with the local police and judicial bureaucracy.”
It is imperative to acknowledge here that Ludhiana has two different fertility centres with the same surname, Sofat. This FIR has been filed against the owner and family of Dr Rama Sofat Hospital and Ruchi Test Tube Baby Centre, not Dr. Sumita Sofat Hospital. Dr. Sumita Sofat Hospital is not associated with this FIR complaint filed by the Deputy Director of the Income Tax Department in any manner whatsoever. These two hospitals are two separate institutions and entities.
